The Word Alive: There's quite a split in this fan base because there are those who think their first offical EP is bland and boring, and those who couldn't have loved it more. I think some of it comes down to people being upset about Craig leaving the band. Thats not up to me to jude others upon though. The musicianship on Empire was genious and felt like the entire band became to have a very more metal feel to them instead of the light hearted post-hardcore music.

I really recomend this album though unless this just isn't your thing. Well anyway here it is.

Quit While you're Ahead is my fave.

Jonny Craig - A Dream Is A Question You Don't Know How To Answer [2009]

Jonathon Monroe Craig has stepped his foot into a new area of music giving his voice a more groove oriented musicianship and R&B vibe emanates from his songs. Sadly opening this album is a terribly mild-at-best introduction track which merely states that Jonny can 'see into most hearts' with a far too crisp acoustic guitar piercing your ears. To save you from this comes the third installment of the "I Still Feel Her" series which began at the end of Emarosa's 2008 record,Relativity. With a groovy feel to the drum and bass lines lead by a beautiful clean guitar line all fronted by Jonny's ever so melodic voice, The rest of the album seems to follow on nicely. What I would give to be Austrailian has to be the best track on this record besides the final track Children of divorce. Though I really like this album it's really not what I was expecting but in a way I guess that is a good thing. I'm kinda suprised that he didn't have and guest vocals on any of his songs besides one. I think I need to listen to this album a few more times before it grows on me some more.

I am very impressed with this record. It's poppy, but indie, it's catchy, but it's melodic and filled with great guitar work, and nothing sounds cliche or purposely 'alt rock' or anything. It's a great collection of songs filled with great pianos, guitars, and a wonderfully imperfect voice that fits each of these songs. The songs are perfectly composed and each have stand out parts that make you want to listen to the album again and again. I'm really surprised they didn't end up somewhere with how good they are. I wish I could find some reviews on this somewhere else, but it seems like no one else cares about this release in the music world, which is sad. It's a collection of really great tunes. It's light hearted and innocent sounding, like the first snow fall of winter; just simply beautiful.

I don't think people understand how much I honestly worship Jonny Craig. I have hoped for an acoustic version of at least one of their songs since Relativity's release, and I couldn't be happier with it. His voice makes it sound so much more like a ballad than a song full of remorse.

God yes I have been looking forward to this! I just got one listen through while it's uploading so I can get this out to you all as soon as possible, but this shit is LEGIT! They really could be the next A Skylit Drive for me. The guitar work is sick, the vocals are reminiscent of Jag and it's an overall pleasant experience in every aspect from the production to the percussion to the guitars; it's all there, and written cohesively. It's a fury of awesomeness, and that's all you really need to know. It even features two of the greatest vocalists out there, Jonny Craig and Craig Owens. Jonny's track was a little weak, he was only on it for about 40 seconds, but it was still sick to hear him on it. And I think this is the only post-hardcore band I know to put a solo in one of their songs (about 2 minutes into "Redeeming A Monster"), so props for that. definitely going to be on super rotation for a while, pick this shit up NOW!

Dance Gavin Dance - Whatever I say is royal Ocean

I am an obsessed DGD fan. And obsession is no understatement. This album has the rawest feel to it, and it's all very under-produced compared to their newer stuff, but I know a lot of people prefer it to their new stuff for a variety of reasons. Most people complain about the mass member changes and Jonny leaving and how he 'defined' the band, but whatever. I personally want them to rerecord these songs now and hear what they sound like with their current line up because Jonny's voice was so young and weak back then, it's no where near as strong as it is now. It doesn't have the same power behind it that he has on DBM and Emarosa's Relativity. I'd also like to see how Kurt sounds on these songs. Maybe they'll do a compilation record with re-recordings of their stuff in a few years? One can only hope. The guitar work is amazing as always and everything has that same proggy feel to it they have now. But it has a lot more cliche screamo areas in it (see cheesy breakdown in 'Burning Down The Nictonie Armoire Pt. 1" which is the same breakdown as in Pt. 2 on their self-titled album). You can also really tell how much they've progressed since this album if you listen to Happiness and compare the two. It's a really awesome thing to listen to one of my favorite bands progression as musicians even with all the line-up changes they've had. They have retained the integrity of their music and been honest to themselves and their fans (sometimes a little too honest [the blog about when jonny left/got kicked out], but it's cool) and their music. One of the most progressive post-hardcore acts out there, if not the most progressive.

This shit is so solid. If you like old DGD, this is RIGHT up your alley. It's got all the weird ass lyrics and awesome self-indulgent lead lines you could ask for with some decent post-hardcore breakdowns. There are a few really solid lines in their music and these guys have some real potential to go somewhere and I really hope they do. Their vocalist even has a tinge of Jonny Craig in him, which is never a bad thing. There is a recurring theme using the word laser in their songs, and I'm still not sure what it means yet, but I sure hope to figure it out one of these days. The production on it isn't the greatest, I really wish the vocals were EQ'd a little higher so I could hear them more, but I guess I can deal. The guitar work is precise and intense with a tight rhythm section all fronted by duel vocalists each with much promise in their respective areas. Be on the lookout for their rise to the top, I know it's coming.

The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute

I'm not even sure how to review this album. I really enjoy Octahedron which just leaked, and I said in it's review that it may be my new favorite Mars Volta record, but after coming back to Frances The Mute, I'm not so sure anything can top this album. Even just the opening track is one of the most ridiculous songs I've ever heard. From the opening spanish guitar into a fury of chaotic guitar lines, drums that are all over the place, guitars that fuck you in the ears and a vocal line to top it all off I'm not sure how they pull off writing a song like this. It all then leads into a real nice slow part with a ridiculously trippy guitar solo followed by vocals again until the final, super awesome chorus then falling out into "The Widow" (perhaps the most well known TMV song). Mind you this all happens over 13 minutes. It makes me jizz myself just a little bit every time I hear it. The entire album just takes you in and doesn't let go. I think it's the greatest sophomore album I've ever heard with the whole 'sophomore slump' thing. Deloused was good, but this album brought The Mars Volta to the next level. And it's all wrapped up in 77 minutes of goodness. Yes, SEVENTY SEVEN. It was released on triple vinyl. I want the triple vinyl of this album so bad. And the actual original pressing of this was only 5 tracks and the final track "Cassandra Gemini" was 32 minutes, not split into a bunch of tracks like on this one.

Bear Vs Shark - Terrorhawk

When I first heard these guys a few years back, I just couldn't get into them. I was never really feeling their sound, bur I have a few friends who are pretty into them and have told me to check them out countless times, and I have before and still not felt it, but I finally figured these guys out and have a new found respect for them. I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out their direction, because they are called a post-hardcore band, which I would consider them, yes, but I had trouble pin pointing it. Well, I finally did, and couldn't be happier. These guys have such a way with blending the aggressive nature of 90's hardcore with beautiful melodies and clean guitars that make what they do chaotic yet melodic all at once, and it's....beautiful. They really brought a fresh face to post-hardcore back when they were around. Even back in 05 bands were starting to abuse this scene like they currently do, and Bear Vs. Shark really brought it back tow hat it was about. These are the kinds of people like myself who really like great melody, but then got into a heavier scene with chunkier riffs and more screams and wondered what it would be like if you combined the two and post-hardcore was born. The back and forth of the screams and singing and the ridiculous lyrics (and song titled ["I Fucked Your Dad"]) combined with beautiful cleans make for one interesting record for 2005. I'm glad I finally feel at peace with this band because they were one I had a hard time with for a long time. But this record is real solid and very interesting, I suggest you check it out if you're into the current sound of post-hardcore to get a feel for where it all came from. It really is a nice throwback to the start.

Falling Closer the sweet release

The only reason a lot of people probably picked this/will pick this up is that Jonny Craig is on the second track, "The Bridge," of this EP. Which is the best song on the EP, yes, but I really am impressed by this band. I've never actually heard of them before, but I guess they've been around for a few years now, and after listening to a couple of their older tracks I looked up, you can really tell these guys have had some awesome progression as a band. They really embody a great hard rock sound for the 21st century. And I don't mean Hard Rock like mid-career Metallica hard rock. I am going to put this under Post-hardcore, but they have a more straight up rock feel to it. And while the vocalist doesn't have the greatest range, he has the power needed to make up for it, and the several well placed screams make him all the better. The guitar work is just phenomenal and sounds perfectly cohesive throughout. I listened to this one time through a few weeks ago and sort of blew it off, but I came back to it and realized I should have never put it down. There are some great riffs and the vocalist really is awesome backed by great musicians.

Polar Bear Club is one of those bands that put out a cd not realizing that it is pure perfection. I imagine they enjoy their own music, but I don't know if they know that their music is completely incredible. I'm serious, this cd is flawless. So much passion and honesty. Not to mention some of the best music I've ever heard. Beautifully raw vocals and lyrics mixed with, I guess you could say, melodic punk guitar work? I can't even explain it. If Rise Against had babies with Hot Water Music and then their children had babies with Further Seems Forever, then you'd come out with something close to PBC. Sound about right? Yea, that's it.

SHORT BIO --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friends since elementary school, Michael Harris and Daniel Anderson began to collaborate musically at age 12, forming your typical run-of-the-mill full-member bands. Eventually they settled into being a two-piece, recording acoustic demos at a local studio in their hometown of Bellingham, WA. The studio’s staff took them under their wing and helped the boys learn the mechanics of production and engineering, which later proved to be key in the band’s development as they spent the next several years conceptualizing and executing their vision. After compiling songs for about two years, the duo’s debut full-length album was finished, the self-released Strange We Should Meet Here. Constructed in Anderson's bedroom on pirated software, and mixed and mastered at the same local studio, Seattle radio stations began spinning tracks from the album. This started a bidding war for the band which led Harris and Anderson to sign with Reprise Records, which re-released Strange We Should Meet Here in 2005.
